Health facility wins best large building prize

The new Young Street development at Anglia Ruskin University’s Cambridge campus has won the Best New Large Building award at the Cambridge Forum for the Construction Industry’s (CFCI) awards.

The buildings at Young Street were designed by Richard Murphy Architects and provide teaching space for nursing and health courses, a café, a 200-seat lecture theatre, office space, the Vision and Eye Research Unit (VERU) and extensive cycle parking.

The 3.5-hectare site, located about five minutes’ walk from Anglia Ruskin’s Helmore building on East Road, was constructed by Mulalley and RG Carter in three phases and was fully complete by September 2015. The new buildings are located next to the refurbished New Street School which houses the Music Therapy Centre.

Judges at the CFCI awards praised the development for its “striking” details and enlivening its location in the place of a derelict former primary school and disused college buildings. They also stated that it was “neighbourly” to the surrounding residential area.

Following the completion of the first phase in 2014, the Young Street buildings won the International Green Apple Silver Award for the Built Environment.

Sandy Lynam, Director of Estates and Facilities at Anglia Ruskin University, said: “The new facility at Young Street has been a tremendous addition to our Cambridge campus, providing state-of-the-art facilities for our students studying subjects such as nursing and midwifery. These are the key workers of the future and it is vital they have the best possible environment in which to learn.

“We’re delighted that the Young Street development has won the Best New Large Building award from the CFCI against some very strong competition. Credit must go to Richard Murphy Architects for their excellent design.”
