How a small Cambridge high-tech company attracted a global corporation

Join Cambridge100 for its Winter Dinner on 20 November at Jesus College, with a talk by Quintus Travis.

Quintus is a renowned entrepreneur and his talk is a personal observation of the route taken to get technology from start-up through acquisition to product market. He will cover his experiences in developing a patented, novel optoelectronic technology (called the Wedge) which attracted the attention of Microsoft who subsequently bought the technology and employed him in their Applied Sciences team.

Quintus will talk about how he and his brother developed an ambitious, chaotic, under-resourced organisation and his experience of:

  • how a major US technology corporation engages with small, new companies and start ups
  • how a novel consumer electronics technology company should enter a product
  • what he and his brother would have done differently knowing what they know now to what they knew then
  • the lessons learned from both sides of the fence.

You can view the “the Wedge” technology at Microsoft Applied Sciences.

The venue is the Cambridge 100 Business Club’s Winter Dinner on Thursday 20th November 2014, at Jesus College. Starting at 6:45PM until 11:00PM. Dress is business, and there is ample parking in the College grounds. Non-members are welcome.

Register for the Dinner on the website at: www.cambridge100.org.uk.

In May this year, Quintus left Microsoft and joined Red Balloon Learner Group as CEO. Red Balloon is a Cambridge based charity that runs full-time educational and therapeutic centres that help severely bullied children who self-exclude from school to get back on an academic track and reconnect with society.

He graduated with an economics degree from Cambridge, worked as a researcher in agribusiness after graduation, followed by six years service in the Royal Marines, plus two years spent training policemen in the Eastern Caribbean. He completed an MBA at Harvard.
