Igniting Inspiration – Bluebird Sapheria’s journey with Prototype Projects

The Bluebird Sapheria project team worked with Prototype Projects to bring a replica turbine to life. Born from a dream to inspire the next generation of innovators, the project ignited a spark that would light the way for young minds into the world of STEM.

Bluebird Sapheria

The Bluebird Sapheria project was established in late 2020 with the aim of creating an inspirational educational vehicle to encourage young students into STEM subjects and careers. Supported by the Campbell Family Heritage Trust, the project gained traction with the support of Don Wales, the nephew of Donald Campbell and grandson of Sir Malcolm Campbell, who provided captivating tales of his family’s achievements. The project team received the express permission of the Trust to use the iconic Bluebird name and livery.

The project’s flagship vehicle, Sapheria Bluebird, is a Guinness World Land Speed Record holder for a dual propulsion (jet/electric hybrid) prototype vehicle. Exhibited at prestigious motoring events and educational gatherings including the ‘Run What Ya Brung’ events at Santa Pod Raceway, Sapheria has become a symbol of innovation and aspiration. The main project workshop is based in St. Ives, Cambridgeshire.

Collaboration with Prototype Projects

Matt Sadler of The Technology Partnership has been involved with the CAD work, assembly, supplier liaison, event logistics and vehicle transport. He is also one of three regular drivers. Matt collaborated closely with Prototype Projects to bring a crucial component to life.

Prototype Projects, a renowned supplier known for their dedication to quality and customer satisfaction, was approached by Matt and the team to sponsor the project by providing a printed, painted, and assembled replica of the jet turbine used in Sapheria. This replica was essential for display purposes while the original turbine was temporarily replaced. The decision to partner with Prototype Projects was influenced by Matt’s long-standing relationship with them. Matt said:

“I chose to approach Prototype Projects for this, as I have always found them to be super friendly, helpful, and they will always go the extra mile to provide the perfect parts.”

From Sapheria to Aero

The project team is now in the closing stages of the assembly of their second vehicle, Bluebird Aero. The Aero is designed to be lighter, more aerodynamic and ultimately faster. The team is hoping to beat their existing land speed record with the Aero. Whereas Sapheria is a more traditional vehicle, the Aero makes use of more modern materials and processes.

The project has involved the creation of a jet turbine replica using cutting-edge technology and materials. Prototype Projects utilised SLA printing with SLA Xtreme material for the turbine, complemented by meticulous painting, primer application, vacuum metallisation, and lacquer finish. The result exceeded expectations, with the quality and attention to detail impressing the entire project team.
