Urban Larder has been on the Broadway in Mill Road for nearly three years, having outgrown its original home in Hope Street Yard. It’s fast-gaining popularity for good, locally-sourced food is not surprising with many delights such as local honey, jams from the Country Markets, bacon, ham, venison, cheeses from The Wobbly Bottom Farm, healthy ready meals, Saffron Ice Creams, pickles, mustards, local farm eggs – both duck and hen and 100 percent organic baked bread – kneaded by local people, with heart and soul in every loaf!
Owner Polly Plouviez has also gained a reputation for stocking some of the widest range of gluten- and wheat-free food as well as a variety of vegetarian treats. She can also cater for summer picnics for 10 people or more and can deliver a delicious selection of quiches, salads, cheeses and cooling drinks.
With its pretty and quirky seating area, you can ‘try before you buy’, as all of the sandwich fillings and other food can be bought to eat in the shop. A very popular addition to the lunchtime menu is the superb Greek slice. Made from ‘his mother’s own recipe’, Yannis (from Crete), brings Polly both a spinach and goat’s cheese feta slice in olive oil pastry and a potato, courgette and herb alternative.
Alongside all the yummy food is a display of work by local artists and lovely wrapping papers, cards and gifts.
And with a calendar of fun evening events and its general place as a ‘hub’ for many of the locals, the Urban Larder provides the community with so much more than just its great selection of free-range, homemade and sustainable food choices.
