A spin-out company from a Cambridge University research project, Breathing Buildings delivers low energy buildings with superb indoor climates, thanks to the company’s patented e-stack, low energy natural ventilation technology. Breathing Buildings has recently secured funding of £1million from Berti Green Accelerator programme, Adapt Low Carbon Group and MMC Ventures, to expand their business in the UK and internationally.
Speaking about the awards, Dr Shaun Fitzgerald, Managing Director of Breathing Buildings said: “We are delighted to be shortlisted for the Ashden Awards. Breathing Buildings continually strives to reduce energy bills by re-thinking natural ventilation in order to avoid the cold draughts normally associated with this type of system. Natural ventilation offers significant energy benefits but these will be frittered away if the air coming into the building from outside has to be pre-heated by mechanical means. Our patented mixing system and deep understanding of the science of natural ventilation means we can reduce the need for mechanical intervention and provide systems that deliver on the full potential of natural ventilation.”
Ashden’s UK Awards Manager Mike Pepler says: “The heating and cooling of buildings is one of the most significant uses of energy in the UK, and while new buildings can be relatively efficient in this area, the challenge is dealing with all the existing buildings. Any innovation which makes it easier to reduce their energy demand is very welcome.”
Finalists will be announced in May 2013 and the awards will be presented at a prestigious ceremony to be held in London on 20 June 2013.
About Breathing Buildings

About The Ashden Awards
The Ashden Awards were founded in 2001 to encourage the greater use of local clean energy to address climate change and alleviate poverty. Since then they have rewarded over 140 green energy champions across the UK and the developing world. Ashden showcases and celebrates best practice, encourages the expansion and replication of winners’ work, raises awareness of the potential of local sustainable energy, and advocates on their winners’ behalf.
