A resident of Cambridge, Professor Webb is an academic, technology pioneer, CEO of Weightless Special Interest Group, and President of the Institution of Engineering and Technology.
In 2012, Professor Webb became CEO of Weightless Special Interest Group, or SIG. ‘Weightless technology’ is the term used to describe wireless connectivity for the low-power, wide-area networks necessary to deliver the Internet of Things – a vision of the future where all kinds of objects are interconnected, actively exchanging data. During his time at Weightless SIG, Professor Webb has grown participants from four founder members to over 1,000.
Professor Webb is an internationally renowned engineer, hugely respected in the field of wireless communication technology. To date, he has published 13 books, more than 100 papers, and is the joint author of 18 patents.
Professor Thorne said: “Professor William Webb has many close ties with our region. Through our relationship with Cambridge Wireless, where he serves on the board, we already have secondary links with William. By recognising his achievements we have the opportunity to build closer ties, and to promote collaboration between Anglia Ruskin University and Weightless SIG and the wider electronics industry.”
