The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) warned charities that they are at risk of breaching the Data Protection Act (DPA) if they do not take the necessary security measures. Sam Younger, chief executive of the Charity Commission, has pointed out that charities have a legal and moral obligation to comply with the Data Protection Act.
Alan Calder, CEO of IT Governance, comments, ‘Data Protection and DPA compliance is a critical issue in the UK. We have witnessed a large number of data breaches in 2011 and 2012 and the ICO has already issued a number of substantial fines. The statistics are worrying. Public sector bodies and charities in particular should be setting an example of good practice and shouldn’t be letting the public down.’
Calder continues, ‘If you’re a charity, you’d rather pursue your charitable objectives than spend your money on fines, wouldn’t you? Therefore, we have decided to offer charities 10% off our products and services and help them become DPA-compliant quickly and avoid fines.’
With growing pressure from the ICO and the public, charities should be taking the issue seriously and meet their DPA-compliance obligations now. Charities can take advantage of IT Governance’s single source provision of DPA resources and act today:
