Over 100 students applied and were interviewed for the 35 places on offer. The successful candidates will gain real-world work experience through paid roles at Anglia Ruskin recruitment and employer events, as well as opportunities to work shadow within the Lord Ashcroft International Business School and external companies.
Each intern is also provided with their own business mentor from an external company, ranging from large multinationals such as Barclays and KPMG to local SMEs. The students teamed up with their mentors at a recent “speed networking” event on campus.
Student Jeremy Rowland said: “I found the speed networking event really beneficial. It was great to get a chance to speak with all of the mentors and gain an understanding about what their job roles involve.”
Donald McFarlane, Recruitment Manager for KPMG, said: “I was really impressed by the quality of the students and how engaged and enthusiastic they were. I am very much looking forward to being part of this exciting programme.”
The mentors will offer career advice, a direct insight into business, and help with networking and CVs. As the number of external mentors grows, so too will the number of places offered to students.
Professor Gary Packham, Acting Dean of the Lord Ashcroft International Business School, said: “We received applications from students across a range of courses in all years, at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. The standard of applicants was very strong and so it has been a difficult selection process.
“The scheme will enhance their experience as a student and is also likely to significantly improve their employment prospects after graduation. It also demonstrates the strong links that the Lord Ashcroft International Business School has with the local business community.
“Although some of the mentors come from large corporations, many are local businesses right here on our doorstep. We’re grateful to all the mentors for sparing their time and expertise to help the next generation.”
