Stephen Allwright, Alana Martin and Edward Alabaster are studying for the BA (Hons) Photography degree at Anglia Ruskin’s Cambridge campus.
Stephen has been named the overall winner of the 2015/16 Student Photography Awards, which is run by Exhibtr.com in conjunction with Olympus UK. The theme of the competition was “Beauty, Fashion and Lifestyle”.
Stephen, who was awarded an Olympus OMD E-M1 camera, said: “I am a Cambridge-based photographer who spent several years bouncing between interests before sublimating fully into photography.
“I work primarily in the areas of portraiture, beauty and editorial photography with occasional diversions into the bizarre, macabre and quirky.”
Fellow student Edward Alabaster was a runner-up in the Ilford Photo Student Photographer of the Year competition, run by HARMAN technology, which received almost 1,000 entries.
The theme of the competition was “Saturday Night at the Movies” and Edward caught the eye of the judges with his photo (above) combining the sinister undertones of Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange with the joyful dance sequence from Singin’ in the Rain.
Edward, 22 from Elsenham in Essex, praised his tutors after his success. He said: “The course is full on at providing its students a professional-level skills set. The lecturers and supporting staff are incredibly talented and helpful, and provide a balanced field of expertise.”
Meanwhile, photography student Alana Martin, from Bury St Edmunds, will see her work on display in Somerset House after being selected for the prestigious 2016 Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition.
Alana’s image, titled Material World, will be on show in London from 22 April to 8 May. The 20-year-old said: “I’m thrilled to have been selected from over 90,000 entries worldwide. Photography has always been a passion of mine and I’m delighted to have my work recognised by the World Photography Organisation.”
