Goldie Sayers, Olympic medallist and British record holder for the javelin, will deliver the sixth Excellence in Sport lecture at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge on Monday, 16 October (5.30pm).
The free event, which is open to the public, will see the Newmarket-born athlete talk about the highs and lows she has experienced in her career, and the commitment and motivation required to be the best in a particular field.
Goldie competed at five World Championships, three Commonwealth Games and three European Championships. She has a bronze medal from the 2008 Olympics, won retrospectively after Russian athlete Mariya Abakumova was disqualified for doping last year, and is an 11-times national champion.
Goldie, who retired from competition earlier this year, said: “My presentation will be about the key factors necessary for success in high performance sport and about developing resilience.
“I think university sport helps cultivate an all-round athlete and certainly helped give me the opportunity to study and further my education whilst training and using great facilities that modern universities have in this country.”
The Excellence in Sport lectures are organised by the Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences and the Cambridge Centre for Sport and Exercise Sciences at Anglia Ruskin. Previous lectures have been delivered by former England cricket captain Graham Gooch, Toni Minichiello, the coach of Jessica Ennis-Hill, and Les Reed, Executive Director of Southampton Football Club.
Dr James Johnstone, Head of Sport and Exercise Sciences, said: “Goldie Sayers has enjoyed a world-class athletics career so is admirably qualified to talk on the Excellence in Sport theme.
“These talks, which attract attendees from all sections of the community, provide an insight in to a unique word of elite sport and the incredible commitment and sacrifice that is required to be the best.”
