The new business, which will operate as Cambridge Industrial Design, is an equal partnership between Alex Jones and Tim Evans, the managing directors of CID and TPD respectively, who will jointly lead the consultancy.
The company brings together CID’s award-winning scientific and technical product experience and close links to Far Eastern manufacturing resources with TPD’s skills and specialism in creating compelling consumer products. Its increased capacity will provide greater security for clients and the ability to work on larger, more complex projects. It will continue to be based at CID’s Newton offices just outside Cambridge.
Between the two founders, the newly merged Cambridge Industrial Design has over 50 years of experience in helping create innovative and compelling products across all sectors from consumer to scientific. Built on a deep understanding of the creative and engineering requirements of today’s products, it provides a full range of services, from initial design concepts through to full production, aimed at companies from startups to multinationals. It has already won numerous accolades, including IDEA and Red Dot awards. International and local clients include Osram, SureFlap and the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute.
“Bringing together the experience and understanding of TPD with CID’s resources is an extremely positive move. It enables us to better serve new and existing customers, through increased capacity and a shared commitment to achievable innovation in product design. Tim and I have known each other for many years and we look forward to working together to expand the business further,” said Alex Jones, joint managing director, Cambridge Industrial Design.
“In today’s competitive market successful product design requires a growing combination of skills to create effective, appealing products. The lines between consumer and industrial design are increasingly blurred. Whatever the market companies are looking to create beautiful, innovative products, built on firm technology foundations that fulfil customer needs. Bringing our skills together enables us to deliver this through a cost-effective, end to end range of services for clients of all sizes,” said Tim Evans, joint managing director, Cambridge Industrial Design.
Set up in 2009, TPD has built a reputation for top quality yet cost effective design, with a particular focus on creative consumer products that combine appealing aesthetics with solid engineering credentials. Client projects include work for Aga, Monitor Audio, US home entertainment company Russound and EOGB Oil Burners.
