Light and sound fuse in a groundbreaking technology and musical collaboration

While issues of climate change and sustainability are global, the e-Luminate Festival this week is keeping it local. The festival, which runs from the 20th – 24th of February in Cambridge city centre, offers the public a way to view clean technology in a visually stunning way. This unique collaboration between clean technologists and artists will transform some of Cambridge’s landmark buildings after dark and provide innovative entertainment for all.

Great St Mary’s Church will be one of the key exhibits with lighting specialists amBX and Pulsar collaborating with artist, David Mack to illuminate the building from the inside out.  Added to that, the technology that amBX uses is also sound responsive and that adds a whole other dimension to the display.  Enter The Dowsing Sound Collective.

Two years ago, a small group of singers -mostly with no experience of performing or any ability to read music - were drawn from the Cambridge community to form a new choir in the city.

Four huge gigs later, the group has grown to a musical collective of over 100 singers and musicians, has plans to go national, and is collaborating with some of the city’s brightest technology companies as part of the e-Luminate Cambridge Festival. Indeed, on Friday 22nd February at 8pm, The Dowsing Sound Collective, amBX and Pulsar will be presenting a free ‘minigig’ in Great St Mary’s Church.  The unplugged, 30-minute set – featuring just 30 of the group’s singers and musicians - will take the group back to its first venue and see the church lit by amBX’s innovative sound responsive lighting technology.

(Image removed)Dowsing’s founder, Andrea Cockerton (pictured right), explains more: “The e-Luminate Festival is all about fusing art and technology and drawing together some of the best energy and creativity in Cambridge… and what we’re trying to do with The Dowsing Sound Collective is in some senses the same – we’re open to all but also want to raise the stakes by singing novel, challenging material and by stretching the boundaries of what we think is possible musically and artistically.”

Sponsored by LED lighting company Pulsar, which has clients drawn from across the world in both the entertainment and architectural sectors, the gig is one of a collection of events happening across the city during the festival.

Simon Cox, Pulsar’s Head of Sales says, “We are extremely pleased to be working with the e-Luminate Cambridge Festival and showcasing the full functionality and versatility that dynamic lighting can provide the local historic landmarks. It will be a great opportunity to showcase energy efficient lighting solutions from a local manufacturer.”
