London’s calling for Anglia Ruskin student

Anglia Ruskin University student Gillian Ellis, from Ely, will have her work displayed at the Mall Galleries in London as part of the prestigious 2016 Columbia Threadneedle Prize.

(Image removed)Gillian, who is studying for an MA in Printmaking at Anglia Ruskin’s Cambridge School of Art, was one of 93 artists to be selected for the main exhibition that takes place in February next year.  In total, 1,973 artists from across Europe submitted work for the competition.

The Columbia Threadneedle Prize is Europe’s leading open competition for figurative and representational art and, at £20,000, one of the most valuable art prizes in the UK.

The winner, announced on 2 February 2016, will also be awarded their own solo exhibition in the Threadneedle Space at Mall Galleries, while visitors to the London exhibition will decide the Visitors’ Choice Award, worth an additional £10,000.

A selection of the works from the London exhibition will also be taken to Italy for a further one-month exhibition at Palazzo Strozzi in Florence in June 2016.

The five-strong judging panel includes Dr Arturo Galansino, Director General at Palazzo Strozzi, and Dr Tim Knox, Director of the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge.

Dr Veronique Chance, Senior Lecturer at the Cambridge School of Art, said “I was thrilled to hear that one of our MA Printmaking students, Gillian Ellis, has been selected for this.

“It is a significant achievement to have been selected from so many international entrants, and it also gives Gillian a great opportunity to have her work shown in the centre of London to such a large audience.  Who knows what else it will lead to?”

The Columbia Threadneedle Prize: Figurative Art Today exhibition runs at the Mall Galleries in central London from 3-20 February 2016.
