Lyn lands place on national award shortlist

An Anglia Ruskin University lecturer has been nominated for a national award for her innovative solution to connect with students on placement in far flung areas of East Anglia.

Lyn Jones (pictured), a lecturer in Midwifery, has been shortlisted for the Contribution to Midwifery Education category of the British Journal of Midwifery Practice Awards 2016.

With many of her third-year students on placements in rural parts of the East of England but also preparing for a major module assessment in Emergency Midwifery Practice, Lyn set up video conferences twice a week. This meant students received contact time without the inconvenience of having to travel a long way into campus at some expense.

Each session was set up per topic in the assessment within the module, with two additional sessions at the end to answer student questions and make clarifications.

Lyn has already won Anglia Ruskin’s Made a Difference Award for her initiative and has also presented to other colleagues and departments about how others can make use of the software to improve teaching.

Lyn said: “Our Midwifery students spend a lot of time on placement but they must also juggle their assessments which means it is a hectic time for them. It’s vital they get access to quality teaching at this time but when some are on placement in remote areas it can be a time-consuming and expensive effort to get to campus for a few hours.

“This initiative has seen large numbers of students able to log in remotely, watch sessions back and view all the documents they need without wasting hours of their valuable time travelling, allowing them to stay focused while on placements.

“I’m thrilled to have been shortlisted for the award and I hope other students and lecturers can benefit from this model.”

Lyn has been shortlisted alongside Brenda Devine, of Northern Ireland Practice and Education Council for Nursing and Midwifery, and Veronica Turner, of the Stillbirth and Neonatal Death charity. The ceremony will take place at the Midland Hotel in Manchester on 8 February.
