Measles outbreaks in the UK, reports The Travel Clinic Ltd

There has been much publicity in the press at the moment about measles outbreaks in the UK, says The Travel Clinic. The majority of cases (confirmed and suspected) are in unvaccinated schoolchildren and young adults, with over half the cases aged between 10 and 30 years of age. Furthermore, a quarter of cases have required hospital treatment.

 Advice for travellers

Measles is potentially a very serious illness which can on rare occasions be fatal. It is highly infectious and is spread through direct contact with an infected person or through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

The implications of this while travelling can only be imagined.

It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR at 12-15 months of age and again pre-school around 3 years 6 months, while unimmunised adults who have not had the disease themselves may consider vaccination if thought to be at risk. Two doses of MMR vaccine are required to give adequate protection.

Reports have been arriving from as far afield as Algeria, Congo, Namibia, Pakistan, USA, France, Nigeria and Brazil to name a few countries with outbreaks.
