Mills & Reeve appointed by guardian of 5,000 years of history

Mills & Reeve has been appointed by English Heritage as its legal advisers following a competitive tender process.

English Heritage cares for over 400 historic  buildings, monuments and sites - from world-famous prehistoric sites to grand medieval castles, from Roman forts on the edges of the empire to a Cold War bunker. Through these it brings the story of England to life for over 10 million  visitors a year.

Recently made an independent charity, English Heritage is now undertaking an exciting programme of commercialisation work to become self-funding over the next eight years.

The firm will primarily advise on charity and commercial law on an initial three-year contract, but also across a full service basis as required, including tax, property and employment.

Ceri Pemberton, English Heritage’s Head of Legal, said “Mills & Reeve really impressed the English Heritage team with their understanding of the sector, and vision for our future as an independent organisation. We are looking forward to working with Neil and the team as we embark on this exciting period for the charity”

The Mills & Reeve team was led by Neil Burton who said: “We’ve had some terrific client wins this year, including the Royal Shakespeare Company, Livability and the RSPB. This market recognition of Mills & Reeve is great to see and to build on that with this win is just fantastic: English Heritage is one of the biggest names in the sector, and at very exciting period in its development. We looking forward to working with them over the years ahead.”
