And the number of 16 to 24-year-olds out of work also fell from 445 in September 2011 to 420 in the same period this year. This figure represents just 1.4 per cent of this age group, compared to 6.4 per cent across the eastern region as a whole and 7.4 per cent across Britain.
Julian said: “This is very good news. Cambridge continues to weather this recession and companies are holding their own while at the same time taking on staff.
“I am delighted that the measures put in place nationally to help young people find work, such as the apprenticeship scheme and work experience initiatives under the government’s youth contract are paying off.
“But we are not out of the woods yet. It is still tough for those who are without work and there is more to do to continue reducing unemployment. The rising cost of utility bills and fuel makes it very difficult for many families and my sympathies are with them.
“I hope that the fact that we have seen the number of people in employment rise nationally to a record of almost 30 million means that we are starting to turn a corner.”
