Nearly £120,000 raised for Arthur Rank Hospice through personal challenges

Energetic members of Team ARHC – supporters of Arthur Rank Hospice who have taken on personal challenges to raise funds for the Charity – have celebrated a year of astounding fundraising success. The team of 207 individuals in all, each took on their own challenge event and collectively raised a whopping £118,077, beating last year’s total by over £10,000!

Held at the newly opened hospice in its bright and airy Bistro, Team ARHC members enjoyed light refreshments before hearing from Ben Capper of Cambridge Spartans – who hopes to qualify for the Iron Man world championships in Hawaii this year - about his impressive achievements to date.  He shared his personal journey from originally being unable to run 5K until now (as he plans planning his eighth Iron Man!) and explained how he now uses his experience to inspire others to achieve their own goals.

Challenges taken on by members of Team ARHC in 2016 and 2017 included runs (London, Brighton and Rome marathons and local half marathons like the Saucony Cambridge and Lode Half), bicycle rides (Cambridge 100 Cycle Ride, Ride London, Vietnam to Cambodia), walks (Norfolk Coastal Path, The Three Peaks, the Scottish Highland Trek), treks (74 kilometres in the Sahara desert, 100 miles in the Yukon Arctic); and 17 skydives from 13,000 feet!

Those taking on a Team ARHC challenge can chose to do anything from a 5k walk in their local area, to maybe more extreme treks, as Kath Austin explains: “It’s incredible to think of the vast range and diversity of challenges taken on by Team ARHC over the years, and this one was no exception. The beauty of doing this kind of fundraising is that you chose something which personally challenges you: one person might need something more extreme like the Yukon Arctic Ultra 100 mile race (which at temperatures well below zero puts icicles on your facial hair!) whereas someone else may gain a real sense of purpose and then achievement as they challenge themselves with a 10k, having never run before.  We would encourage anyone who’s even vaguely tempted to do something which stretches their boundaries or horizons this year, to get in touch and have a chat with us about what might be the perfect challenge for you this year. We’d love to hear from you.”

To join Team ARHC and take on your own challenge in 2017 or 2018, visit arhc.org.uk/challenges where you will find specific details of the runs, cycle, sky dives and treks available.  To  chat about anything in further detail or discuss taking on your own unique challenge, please contact Amy Bidwell or Kath Austin in the fundraising office, on 01223 675883.

Arthur Rank Hospice’s care and services are delivered free of charge from the Hospice’s purpose-build home at Shelford Bottom, Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in people’s home across Cambridgeshire via the Arthur Rank Community Team.

Funds raised by those taking on challenges with Team ARHC contribute towards £7.45 million it costs annually to provide the broad array of care and services the Hospice offers to people who are living with a life-limiting illness, and their loved ones.
