New peer learning group is planned for new and junior managers

Are you new to a management role – or about to move into one? If so, you could benefit from sharing experiences and developing your skills with like-minded people in a newly-formed Learning Collaboration (LC) peer learning group.

As part of its suite of high quality peer learning groups established over the past few years, the Cambridge Network has been running two groups for experienced and strategic managers, designed to enhance their leadership skills. These have proved so successful since their inception in 2012 that the groups are running again this year.

In fact, peer learning has been so effective that Network members also requested a similar group for new and junior managers. This ran for the first time last year.  Following its success, interested people are now invited to attend a special Taster Session on Thursday March 26th, with a view to the group programme beginning again in April.

What is it?

Emma Stewart, LC's Head of Development, explains: "The programme starts with a two-day intensive workshop, followed by seven short peer learning sessions over the course of the year.

“These address the real issues, challenges and opportunities encountered by participants and the meetings include guest speakers, round table discussions, book reviews and visits to member organisations.

"Agendas are always set in consultation with group members and sessions are facilitated by a very experienced management coach, Colin Chrebelski, who has himself worked in industry and also had a very successful career in learning and development."

Topics covered in the new managers’ group last year included

  • Performance management
  • Reward and benefits packages
  • Employer branding
  • How to conduct one to one meetings
  • Company core values and missions
  • Work/life balance
  • Personal development
  • Survival in a time of organisational change.

Who is it for?

The new group is aimed at emerging managers and those about to embark on management roles, who are keen to explore and develop their all-round leadership performance. The LC team works closely with the course facilitator to ensure peer group members are at a similar level of responsibility.

The objective is to create a high quality peer learning group that will bring together individuals from different organisations and business sectors to work collaboratively and reflect on, refresh and embed the knowledge, skills and behaviours they need to be effective managers.

The programme has been designed to complement – not duplicate – existing or previous training and development. Those who have completed the LC Transition to Management course will have an advantage. (Please note - this course is next running on 24-25 March 2015.)

Ideally, participants will already be in a role requiring them to manage others, and they should be prepared to commit to the group for every session as far as possible (actual dates will be agreed with each group).

Who is the facilitator?

Colin Chrebelski – Facilitator/Management Coach, DG International

Prior to Colin’s career in training and development he was a senior manager in two major retail organisations and was the industrial buyer for a multinational electronics manufacturer.

Colin is passionate about helping people and organisations reach their full potential. He has a successful career with a lifetime's experience in learning and development. He has an MBA, a Certificate in Education, is a Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute and is a member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.

He is seen by his customers and colleagues alike as an enthusiastic, adaptable and encouraging people developer with a rare capacity for bringing clarity to complex issues.

How much does it cost?

Fees for the new managers' group are £950 + VAT per person per year.

How do I sign up?

If you are interested in attending the Taster Session on March 26th, or indeed in joining the new managers’ peer learning group, please contact Emma Stewart in the first instance.

Peer learning groups are a special offering from the Learning Collaboration, which works on behalf of Cambridge Network members to organise, purchase and share training and management development opportunities, delivered locally. That means all members benefit from economies of scale, gaining improved access to high quality professional training courses at value-for-money prices.
