Newport station becomes a blooming marvellous habitat

Newport railway station is blooming - thanks to over 3,500 bee and butterfly friendly plants successfully planted by the village's business community. For the past eight months, members of Newport Business Association (NBA) have cleared, landscaped and planted the station with herbs and plants donated by local community groups, businesses and schools.

With help from the community, NBA removed tonnes of rubbish and re-landscaped the area. Essex Probation Service teams assisted with digging in the plants, building paths and laying wood chippings to develop a bee and butterfly friendly habitat for all to enjoy.

Alan Neville, from Greater Anglia, said: “Everyone appreciates the hard work NBA and the community has put into achieving the transformation so far. NBA has driven change in the community and we support the work that has been done. I hope people pop along to see the lovely flowers."

Jeremy Rose, founder of NBA, said: "We set about transforming the station environment by making areas around Newport station safe and tidy. We're beginning to make a difference. With more plants being donated by the community every year, we're improving a forgotten area of our community by creating a blooming marvellous bee and butterfly habitat for wild life."

Steve Todd, Todd Contracting, commented:  “Supporting this project provides us with an opportunity to give something back to the local community. We can see the results we're all having on making this project a success. Month by month, year by year, we see this developing into a great community project."
