The programme aims to deliver on the commitment detailed within the Five Year Forward View – creating the conditions and cultural change necessary for proven innovations to be adopted faster and more systematically through the NHS, and to deliver examples into practice for demonstrable patient and population benefit.
The three themes for this year are:
- prevention
- earlier intervention, and
- long-term condition management.
About the NIA
The NIA aims to select great individuals who represent high impact, evidence based innovations, want to participate in a fellowship programme and are willing to open share their learning. The NIA supports the accelerated use of innovation for patient benefit across the NHS
Why is the NIA important?
Solution identification: An international horizon scanning platform supported by a rigorous multi-stage selection process to identify quality improving and cost saving innovations, ready for implementation
Spread support to innovators: NIA Fellows are supported to ensure their innovations are implementation ready and their spread strategy is robust e.g., innovations are on relevant procurement frameworks
Knowledge to the NHS on spread: Insights on how solutions are ‘spread’ across different organisations and geographies are captured and shared
Unlocking barriers nationally: Through the partnership with NHS England and Prof Sir Bruce Keogh’s chairing of the NIA Board, there is nationally assistance in the unblocking of barriers to NIA innovations.
What the NIA offers successful fellows
Fellows will have access to a broad multi-stakeholder network, through the hosts, partners, sponsors and mentors, providing appropriate opportunities and collaborations that they may otherwise not have access to
Successful innovators joining the NIA will get access to a range of support from leading institutions and industry, including learning opportunities, critical challenge, support and mentorship, a peer network and bursary.

Previous East of England NHS Innovation Accelerator Fellows
In the last round, the East of England was represented by four successful innovation projects:
- Dr Maryanne Mariyaselvam, Clinical Research Fellow at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Kings Lynn and Cambridge University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, for the Non-injectable Arterial Connector.
- Dr Penny Newman, Medical Director at Norfolk Community Health and Care, and Associate with Health Education East of England, for Health Coaching for Behaviour Change.
- Dr Peter Young, Consultant in Anesthesia and Director of Critical Care at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Kings Lynn, for the PneuX Pneumonia Prevention System
- Andrea Howarth, Head of Clinical Services, Congenica Ltd, for Sapientia.
