Your standard password, I mean.
This is one of my favourite things to talk about. And there’s good reason.
These are strange times we find ourselves in at the moment. Everyone’s unsure what’s going to happen. We’re all a bit on edge. People aren’t quite themselves.
And when that happens, there’s always someone evil out there just waiting to take advantage.
Cyber criminals are making the most of these times. They know most schools and businesses have many staff working from home. They also know that a lot of this was done last minute and with no real plan to speak of.
Sometimes things move quickly with lock downs and the situation is seen as temporary, meaning that your systems may not have been designed for this scenario.
Home working can bring an array of security concerns that need to be addressed and the bad guys are quite simply taking advantage of the current situation. Online crime has never been at the current levels.
Best practice such as:
- Using a different randomly generated password for every login and a password manager to keep track of hundreds of passwords for you …
- The National Cyber Security Centre also has some good ideas around making passwords strong but still easy to remember.
Use a strong and separate password for your email:
If a hacker gets into your email, they could:
- Reset your other account passwords.
- Access information you have saved about yourself or your business or school.
Your email password should be strong and different to all your other passwords. This will make it harder to crack or guess.
Using 3 random words is a good way to create a strong, unique password that you will remember.
You should also protect your other important accounts, such as banking or social media.
And with everything else that’s going on, a data breach is the last thing you want to have to deal with!
