Olympic events provide opportunities for international trade in the East of England

With a global audience of four billion, 120 Heads of State visiting and half a million extra visitors, the London 2012 Olympics offers a once in a lifetime opportunity to showcase the UK. And the games also bring great opportunities for firms in the East of England to maximise their international trade potential with a series of events organised by UKTI.

During the Olympics, Lancaster House will be the venue for the British Business Embassy hosting a programme of conferences and networking opportunities for British and international businesses organised by UKTI and the British Business Club.

At the same time UKTI East is inviting regional businesses to come along to its own series of events, where key sessions from the British Business Embassy will be streamed live, and there will also be local key note speakers and sessions tailored to regional needs and priorities. Each event focuses on a different sector and provides specialist briefings and local opportunities for networking.

The British Business Club (www.britishbusinessclub.org) is already hosting an online, one stop shop providing details of up to date networking events, business activity, news and details of potential partners. The aim is to boost opportunities for UK companies and help them make beneficial international business connections. An online profile showcasing their business capability and expertise allows them to make connections with business partners worldwide.

Events in the East of England include:

  • 2 August - Global Business Summit on Life Sciences & Healthcare – University Arms, Cambridge, 7.45am – 12.00pm

This event will include a keynote address by George Freeman MP, introducing a main theme of ‘Demonstrating Regional Advanced Engineering Capability’ – along with a presentation by the Technology Strategy Board (TSB) on how ‘collaboration between academia and business has helped our region retain and build its leading edge position’.

A number of local case study companies will also highlight how they have, with the help of TSB grants, been able to successfully internationalise their ideas with support from UKTI.

Liz Basing, Regional Director for UKTI East, said:  “One of the key aims of UKTI during the London 2012 Olympic Games is to help firms emulate the success of Business Club Australia which, since the Sydney Olympics, has helped companies win business worth Aus $1.7Bn across the world.

“There will be a wealth of business opportunities following the Olympic Games, and during the Games themselves, UKTI East will work with partners to produce events designed to draw on the Olympic spirit of the games but also provide tangible and direct value for business participants.

“The Olympics is a once in a generation opportunity for the UK to demonstrate its global capabilities and become a focus of interest for global business. Business leaders from around the world will be visiting the UK and this will provide a fantastic opportunity for the region’s companies to build new relationships and develop existing ones.”
