Oscar winner given award by alma mater

A two-time Academy Award-winning make-up artist has received the Anglia Ruskin University Alumni Success in Business Award during a graduation ceremony at the Corn Exchange, Cambridge.

Mark Coulier, who studied Illustration at Anglia Ruskin in the mid-1990s, set up Coulier Creatures FX in 1996. Since going into the industry, he has worked on a host of Hollywood blockbusters including Alien 3, Star Wars Episode 1 and The Beach.

Coulier Creatures FX specialises in prosthetic make-up and went on to recreate the horrific burns injuries suffered by Niki Lauda in the Ron Howard movie Rush. This was closely followed by the long-awaited Nelson Mandela biopic Long Walk to Freedom, for which Mark created character make-ups and aged those characters over a 30-year period. He has also been tasked with creating the make-up for the villain in the forthcoming Bond movie, Spectre.

Mark has won Emmy awards for the mini-series Merlin in 1999, and for Arabian Nights in 2000 and was an Academy Award and BAFTA winner in 2011 for his work on The Iron Lady, where he transformed Meryl Streep into an ageing Margaret Thatcher. This year he won his second Oscar and BAFTA for his work on The Grand Budapest Hotel.

In total, Mark has worked on more than 50 films during a 27-year career in the industry, and has become one of the best in the business, working closely with many Hollywood superstars.

Professor Michael Thorne, Vice Chancellor of Anglia Ruskin University, said: “We are delighted to recognise Mark’s achievements as an Anglia Ruskin alumnus who is an Academy Award-winning creative artist. Mark is an inspirational role model for our Film Studies and Illustration students, showing just how far this field of study can take you, and is a worthy winner of the 2015 Alumni Success in Business Award.”

The award is sponsored by Luminus Group.
