Outstanding students shortlisted for awards

Healthcare students from Anglia Ruskin University have been shortlisted for prestigious national awards which recognise exceptional professional skills and potential.

Aisha Gaido, from Chelmsford, and Seana Hughes, from Cambridge, have been nominated for the UK’s only scholarships for student nurses and midwives, run by Cavell Nurses’ Trust. Aisha is shortlisted in the community category and Seana for the outstanding academic achievement title.

The finalists will be chosen next month by a panel of eminent judges, comprising leading nurses and midwives, including Professor Lesley Page, President of the Royal College of Midwives.  Aisha and Seana will be interviewed by the panel, alongside 27 other candidates.

Winners of the top awards will receive up to £2,000 to further their professional practice either in this country or internationally, in conjunction with their university.

“Aisha is a proactive student who seeks new learning opportunities to improve patient care,” said Aisha’s tutor Hephzibah Samuel, Lecturer in Nursing at Anglia Ruskin.

“She is a deep thinker, a quick learner and discusses issues appropriately, and I am really pleased that she has been shortlisted for the Cavell community award.”

Fran Galloway, Senior Lecturer in Midwifery at Anglia Ruskin and Seana’s tutor, said: “Seana has the potential to be a future leader of the profession.

“She is a thoughtful and measured person and it is always pleasing to recognise the student who makes the clear links between theory and practice."

There are five award categories covering academic achievement, outstanding student midwife and nurse, leadership and community.

Previous winners of the scholarships have taken the opportunity to study abroad.  Last year’s winner of the leadership award travelled to Peru to help nurse families afflicted by poisoned water courses caused by mining activity.

Seana, a second year student, commented:  “I know that Anglia Ruskin students have done very well in these awards since they were launched so the bar has been set very high, but I feel privileged to be shortlisted for the Outstanding Academic Achievement Award.  My application for the travel scholarship detailed my hopes to undertake an elective placement in Mexico to better understand the role of the midwife within their obstetric-led culture.”

Third year Anglia Ruskin Midwifery student Liz Blamire won last year’s academic achievement award and is using the scholarship to fund trips to conferences in Belgium and the Czech Republic.

Cavell Nurses’ Trust was formed in 1917 and each year the charity helps hundreds of nurses, midwives and healthcare assistants who have fallen on hard times.  For further information about Cavell Nurses’ Trust, please visit www.cavellnursestrust.org or call 01527 595999.
