In Cambridge City and South Cambridgeshire District councils' recently submitted Local Plans, the two councils are proposing using the new Station to kick start improving the area with new employment opportunities through an Area Action Plan.
In a letter to landowners, parish councils and stakeholders, the councils are inviting initial views on issues to be considered that could effect the regeneration of the area. This will help the councils put together some options for a wider public consultation which is planned around the end of the year.
Cambridgeshire County Council secured planning permission for the new station at the end of last year - which will be used by around 3,000 passengers each day when it opens - unlocking the development as a second gateway to the area.
The new station is due to open in 2016.
The Area Action Plan for Cambridge Northern Fringe East will cover the land between the A14, Milton Road, the site of the Cambridge Science Park Station, and the residential area of Chesterton.
Jo Mill, South Cambridgeshire District Council's director of planning and new communities, said: "The new station provides a perfect platform to improve the area and link together jobs, transport and homes. Through previous consultations and plans we believe a development which provides a high level of employment would be beneficial. It is excellent to be able to begin our initial engagement at this early stage and we will carry out a much wider consultation later in the year giving everyone a really good chance to have an input."
Patsy Dell, Cambridge City Council's Head of Planning Services, said: "This is an exciting opportunity to bring about the comprehensive planning of this important gateway into the city. The area can accommodate a significant number of further jobs for the local economy and become a destination in its own right. We look forward to taking forward the Area Action Plan and working with residents, landowners and other stakeholders in this process."
