£1m flood defence plans welcomed by Huppert

The government money will be spent in Kings Hedges, Arbury and Cherry Hinton to prevent surface water flooding in 2013/14.

In Kings Hedges and Arbury 1,155 homes will be protected at a cost of £.43 million while in Cherry Hinton £.63 million will be invested to safeguard 788 homes.

The money is part of a £294 million investment in 93 flood defence schemes across the country.

Julian said: “This is extremely good news for Cambridge. People should not have to live with the worry of water pouring into their homes every time we get a heavy downpour. It brings misery and destruction and disrupts lives.

“Unfortunately, the heavy rain we have experienced has left some of our drainage systems unable to cope which has led to water lying on the surface and increasing the risk of flooding. This investment will allow us to tackle the problem areas giving residents peace of mind.

“And for new developments, Cambridge City Council has adopted its award winning sustainable drainage design so that heavy rainfall can be managed better by using natural methods such as soakaways rather than relying on underground pipes. This means drainage can be designed to better suit the site for which it is intended.”
