The relay race is one of Cambridgeshire’s largest annual charity events. This year it will be raising funds for East Anglian’s Children’s Hospices (EACH), which is one of Pure’s chosen charities and one which it has been supporting since the company was founded in 2002.
On Sunday 20th September the Pure team, comprising Mark Wishart, Scott Woodrow, Gemma Pritchard-Jones, Shane Green, Katherine Bell and Caroline Batchelor, will each run the 1.7 mile course in relay format. The race, which first began in 1992 and is organised by Hewitsons Charitable Trust, follows in the footsteps of the famous film, taking its scenic route through the streets and colleges of Cambridge.
All sponsorship money raised by the event will be used to support the vital service of The EACH True Colours Symptom Management Team. This team aims to ensure all life-threatened children, young people and their families living in the region, have access to vital support and advice when they need it most. The provision of these nurses, which is funded entirely through local fundraising, provides families with choices to manage their child or young person’s healthcare needs and symptoms in a place of their choosing. They work with families and local care professionals to develop individual symptom management plans.
Mark Wishart said: “Chariots of Fire has become a real fixture in the Cambridgeshire calendar and we’re proud to be a part of it. We like to sign up for charity events which require a group effort, as we love a team challenge here at Pure. Some of our colleagues have taken part in the race before, but this year’s team are all new to the event. We’re all busy preparing and training as a lot of our clients also compete and the friendly rivalry is already building between us all!”
Since the event started in 1992, Chariots of Fire has raised over £1 million for local and regional charities, with an estimated 6,245 teams having taken part in the race, with approximately 37,470 individual runners pitting themselves against each other.
This year EACH has set an ambitious, yet necessary, fundraising target for all participants of Chariots of Fire of £152,000. To reach this it has set a challenge to every team that enters of raising a minimum of £400 to support this vital service.
