Fair Havens Hospice, currently based in Second Avenue, Chalkwell is no longer fit for purpose and after years of searching, the charity has now entered into an agreement, subject to contract, with Bellway Homes to develop the Ekco factory site in Priory Crescent, Southend.
By building a new adult hospice, Havens Hospices will be able to care for more patients and meet the increasing demand for their specialist care. Tanya King of Havens Hospices said “The demand on our services is becoming extremely difficult to manage and patients with long term illnesses, such as cancer and motor neurone disease, have increasingly complex symptoms and are living for longer.”
She added “The new site will increase the vital number of care beds to 16 and provide larger rooms that will enable family and friends to visit and stay overnight at the end of their loved one's life.”
Richard Wollaston, a consultant at Birketts who established the race in 1998, commented “we are absolutely delighted that the proceeds from this year’s Birketts’ Race4Business will not only be given to a very commendable charity, but also a much needed development for them.” Richard added “Each and every entrant in the race will contribute towards helping us achieve our target for Fair Havens’ new hospice. We encourage as many people to enter as possible to help support them in reaching their goal.”
The 3.5 mile race will take place on Thursday 26 June, starting in Chelmsford High Street, continuing through West Park and Admirals Park and finishing at Birketts’ offices in New London Road. There is no minimum speed or fitness standard and entrants may walk, jog or run the course.
Registration for the event will open in early April, please visit www.birketts.co.uk/race4business for more information and to register.
