Researchers and PHDs invited to apply for EIT Food MAKEathon

Call for researchers and PHDs to apply to take part in an exciting new project which has launched across Europe, bringing together a consortium of global companies and world class researchers in a series of exciting MAKEathons. The first is a special three-day Sugar Hack at Makespace Cambridge with the sole aim of solving our sugar crisis and significantly improving people’s future lives.

Makespace Cambridge writes:

Sugar consumption is now a global problem for us all.  Every year, nearly four million people die from blood sugar-related conditions such as strokes, heart attacks, kidney failure and obesity.  Diabetes now affects close to 450 million people round the world, almost double those affected in 1980. In the UK alone, some 18 million people are classed as “pre-diabetic” with an increased chance of developing type 2 diabetes.

What: Sugar Hack 2019: A Unique Opportunity to Help Solve the World’s Escalating Sugar Consumption Problem

Where: Makespace Cambridge, 16 Mill Lane, Cambridge, CB2 1RX

When: 10am Friday 19th – Sunday 21st July 2019 5pm (inclusive)

We are looking for people with creative minds, practical ideas and multi-disciplinary expertise, able to work intensively in a team over the long weekend and, most importantly, ready to take on the challenge.

Makespace Cambridge is providing its 4000 sq. ft. community workshop in the centre of Cambridge and all the tools needed to conceive, design and create a prototype which will enable consumers and businesses to lower sugar consumption. Makespace Cambridge has a wide range of equipment from lathes to laser cutters and 3D printers to support this MAKEathon. All you need to bring is yourself and your input.

Places are limited so please apply early to avoid disappointment. Just 20 applicants will be selected over two rounds. Applicants who are not offered a place in the first round, will be automatically considered for a place in the second. The deadline for Round One is 15th June 2019. The deadline for Round Two is 1st July 2019. We are committed to diversity and members of under-represented groups are particularly encouraged to apply.

Please join us! You could really make a difference!
