The Wellcome Sanger Institute is proud to announce that nine of its current and former academics and three honorary or associate faculty members have been named on the annual Highly Cited Researchers™ 2021 list from Clarivate.

Current Sanger Institute academics include Dr Sarah Teichmann, Dr Inigo Martincorena, Dr Peter Campbell, and Professor Sir Mike Stratton.

In addition, the five former Sanger researchers cited are Dr John Tate, Professor Gordon Dougan, Dr Simon Harris, Dr Alan Walker, and Dr Ludmil Alexandrov, who was previously a PhD student at the Institute.

The anticipated annual list identifies researchers who demonstrated significant influence in their chosen field or fields through the publication of multiple highly cited papers during the last decade. Their names are drawn from the publications that rank in the top one per cent by citations for field and publication year in the Web of Science™ citation index.

This year’s list includes 24 Nobel laureates, including five announced this year. Also included are 77 Citation Laureates™: individuals recognised by Clarivate, through citation analysis, as ‘of Nobel class’ and potential Nobel Prize recipients.

David Pendlebury, Senior Citation Analyst at the Institute for Scientific Information at Clarivate, said: “It is increasingly important for nations and institutions to recognize and support the exceptional researchers who are driving the expansion of the world’s knowledge. This list identifies and celebrates exceptional individual researchers at the Wellcome Sanger Institute who are having a significant impact on the research community as evidenced by the rate at which their work is being cited by their peers. The research they have contributed is fueling the innovation, sustainability, health and security that is key for our society’s future.”

Dr Julia Wilson, Associate Director at the Wellcome Sanger Institute, added: “At the Sanger Institute, we are incredibly proud of all of our researchers, and the exceptional science that they produce. It is fantastic that so many of our present and past academics and faculty have been celebrated on the Highly Cited Researchers 2021 list, and I would like to congratulate them, and everyone else on the list, on this achievement. Research holds the answers to many ongoing questions and challenges around health and disease and it is vital that we continue to show our appreciation to those who are committed to pushing the boundaries to make these discoveries.”
