Sci-fi gets serious at London’s ExCeL this summer!

Science fiction gets serious this summer as leading academic and writer Professor Farah Mendlesohn leads the exhibits team at Loncon 3, the 72nd World Science Fiction Convention.

Professor Mendlesohn, Head of English, Communication, Film and Media at Anglia Ruskin University and a Hugo-winning author, is Project Manager of the Exhibits Hall, which is sponsored this year by Anglia Ruskin.

Loncon 3, running from 14-18 August, is the first Worldcon to be held in London since 1965 and is expected to attract more than 7,000 fans to London ExCeL, including hundreds of writers, editors, artists, scientists and other professionals from across the science fiction and fantasy community.

The Worldcon hosts the Hugo Awards, the oldest awards in science fiction, and features a programme of over 1,000 interviews, panel discussions, music, theatrical and costumed events.

The convention celebrates the genre in all its forms and, in particular, the works of this year’s guests of honour Iain M Banks, John Clute, Chris Foss, Malcolm Edwards, Jeanne Gomoll, Robin Hobb and Bryan Talbot.

One of this year’s highlights promises to be an “in conversation” with Game of Thrones author George RR Martin.

The Exhibits Hall will feature over 100 dealers of books, comics and art, and over 80 science, history, archaeology and architecture exhibits and presentations from individuals, institutions and universities.

Anglia Ruskin will be represented by insect expert Dr Peter Brown, who will be talking about the “aliens in your garden”, a media installation entitled “Vice Versa Et Cetera” by Dr Simon Payne, an art project called “2100: The Future We Want” run by Anglia Ruskin’s Global Sustainability Institute, and the artwork of student Kelly Smith and Will Hill, Senior Lecturer in Graphic Design.

Professor Mendlesohn said: “It’s been wonderful working with scientists, artists and collectors from all over the country, and fantastic that Anglia Ruskin has supported us to the hilt.”
