'Secret Millionaire' Mike receives honorary degree

A businessman who attributes his success to starting work at the age of seven will receive an honorary degree from Anglia Ruskin University in his home city of Peterborough.

Mike Greene will receive the Honorary Doctor of Education award at Peterborough Cathedral on Thursday (25 September) after selling his successful retail consultancy business in order to dedicate himself to helping charities and new businesses.

In 2011, he appeared on the Channel 4 programme Secret Millionaire, returning to the Peterborough districts of Bretton and Dogsthorpe where he spent his childhood. He saved a much-loved after-school club from closure and helped a YMCA hostel by providing computer equipment to help homeless young people with job searches, CV writing and application letters.

In 2012, Mike raised over £100,000 in just 100 days for 100 charities based in and around Peterborough. He supports several charities and is still involved in business and consultancy.

Professor Michael Thorne, Vice Chancellor of Anglia Ruskin, said: “Mike’s success in business and dedication to his charity work makes him a superb role model for our students. He has never forgotten his roots here in Peterborough and I am delighted to be able to present this award to him in a city that is so close to his heart.”
