Singapore patent attorney seconded to Marks & Clerk Cambridge office

Marks & Clerk, the largest firm of patent and trade mark attorneys in Cambridge, is welcoming Gayathri Mohanakrishnan, patent attorney from Marks & Clerk’s Singapore office, for a period of three months. Both the Cambridge office and Mohanakrishnan will benefit from the opportunity to share experience and knowledge of each other’s markets and practices, particularly in her area of expertise, biotechnology.

Mohanakrishnan’s secondment will mean that clients of Marks & Clerk Cambridge, as well as its attorneys, are able to interact directly with a practicing South East Asian attorney and learn more from her about protecting intellectual property (IP) in South East Asia. Thanks to its global network, which includes offices in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, Marks & Clerk can provide an integrated IP strategy, drafting and filing service for businesses seeking to expand from the UK into South East Asia.

The variety of economic opportunities available in South East Asia has led many organisations to locate different parts of their supply chains in various countries within the region, or to market products or services there. In doing so, IP protection becomes particularly necessary.

Singapore acts as a regional hub for much of the economic activity taking place in South East Asia. Despite similarities between the region’s IP systems and the UK’s, certain differences mean that unfamiliar challenges await organisations looking to protect their IP in the region.

Tim Andrews, Cambridge Office Managing Partner for Marks & Clerk, commented: “More and more local clients are looking to the possibilities and opportunities offered for businesses throughout South East Asia. However, the differences between the UK and South East Asian markets and cultures mean that these opportunities are accompanied by unfamiliar risks.

“During Gayathri’s time with us, we hope to improve our knowledge of South East Asian markets and the local IP regimes our clients operate in. At Marks & Clerk, we enjoy genuine international expertise through our wider network of offices, and secondments like Gayathri’s help us further integrate our global IP offering.”

Gayathri Mohanakrishnan, who arrived this week, said: “Like Cambridge, Singapore is a biotechnology and high-tech centre of excellence. Both of our offices regularly deal with all kinds of clients, from start-ups to universities to multinationals. With growing interest in the city back in Singapore, particularly its biotechnology industry, I was keen to take up the opportunity of working with Marks & Clerk’s Cambridge life sciences team.”
