The sky’s the limit for Anglia Ruskin students

Two high-flying Anglia Ruskin University art students have had their designs selected to appear on passenger walkways at Stansted Airport.

Laura Burleigh and Amber-Louise Wallis, who are both from Essex, are on the BA (Hons) in Illustration degree course at Anglia Ruskin’s Cambridge School of Art.

The two students were presented with £250 vouchers by Karen Smart, Stansted’s Customer Service and Security Director, and Neil Banks, Head of Airport Customer Services, at the official unveiling of the murals, which adorn the walls of tunnels leading from the car park and the coach station to the main terminal building.

Laura Burleigh impressed the judges with her design “All things circular”, which features giant clocks and compasses representing two factors key to the smooth running of an airport.

The 22-year-old, from Chelmsford, said: “Visiting Stansted and learning about the multiple operations, and the detail and complexity that goes into running a successful airport, was a vital factor in my final design.

“Presenting my illustrations and designs to a professional client was incredibly exciting, and having my design selected was simply fantastic.”

The mural by 25-year-old Amber-Louise Wallis, from Wivenhoe, was inspired by the different destinations served from Stansted.  She said: “My design is about starting a journey, about adventure.  The types of activities I have featured within my work are all taken from the range of destinations accessible from the airport.

“I set up the piece to look like a series of photographs.  My aim was to create a design that evokes nostalgia of a past adventure or to suggest one for the future.  Red features in most of the images as it is the colour of memory and the bright, bold colours create an almost exotic atmosphere that draws the eye.”

Chris Owen, Head of the Cambridge School of Art, said: “Taking a brief, creating a design, and then seeing it come to fruition in such a high-profile location has been a great experience for Amber-Louise and Laura.

“We’ve thoroughly enjoyed working with Stansted Airport on this project and we hope the millions of passengers who are greeted by the artwork at the beginning or end of their journey enjoy it too.”
