Local school pupils are primed and ready to take on the Fun Run, sponsored by The Cambridge Building Society and Ward Gethin Archer, this Sunday 22nd November. The fun run, which has inspired some impressive extra-curricular running activities within the school community, welcomes a team of nearly 50 runners and walkers made up of pupils, staff, governors and parents!
The school first became involved with the charity fun run in 2013, when teacher Mrs Sarah Lund mentioned to her class that she would be doing the fun run. With this mention, three boys who were all pupils entered with their parents and their enthusiasm was contagious. In 2014 several teachers, Year 5 & 6 pupils and parents signed up, burgeoning the team to thirty and raising a grand total of £937. Running fever grew as the school entered other fun runs and set up their own school community running club, buddying up with their peers during the training sessions. The momentum continues with a team of nearly fifty already committed to this year’s event!
Deputy Head teacher, Mrs Sarah Lund explains: “We first became involved with Ely Festive 5K to keep fit and raise money for a good cause. Some staff members had loved ones cared for by the Hospice so we have always felt quite passionately about it. It is lovely to see how the running bug has spread across the whole school community. If you are motivated to support our pupils please visit our JustGiving page: https://www.justgiving.com/strethamfestive5k/”
Tasha Auburn, Marketing & Events Officer, adds: “We would love those supporting around the course to give the Stretham School team a special cheer as they speed past in their blue t-shirts and branded high-vis vests.Although registration is now closed and we are unable to accommodate any more runners due to health and safety and insurance reasons, we would welcome supporters willing to cheer on those taking part!"
The Christmas vibe will be in full swing with a festive sound-track from Sing! Choirs, Peacocks Tea Rooms providing delicious mulled wine and Santa available for photos. Arthur Rank Hospice Charity would also like to thank the regular weekly farmers market and car boot who are kindly sharing the Market Place and Markets & Town Centres Team at East Cambridgeshire District Council for their help with this; our sponsors The Cambridge Building Society and Ward Gethin Archer who will also be running; Cambridgeshire County Council for the loan of a gazebo; the Wicked Cake Company for flapjack bars; Michelle Good of Feel Good Fitness who will provide the warm up; Star FM and The Ely News who will be handing out medals and goody bags at the finish line.
The fun run reached full capacity last week so no further entries are possible either before or on the day. However, supporters are welcome to cheer runners around the route and join in the festive fancy-dress fun!
