The Stridonium 2014 Conference: Communicating in business – getting language right

Andrew Wood, Head of the Anglo Dutch desk at Birketts and director of the Netherlands-British Chamber of Commerce, will be speaking at this year’s Stridonium conference at the Møller Centre in Cambridge later this month.

The international forum for professional linguists aims to encourage businesses to take a closer look at the language they use. The conference will highlight the importance of:

  • effective legal and business communication
  • recognising cultural and business differences between countries and avoiding pitfalls
  • saving time and money by buying wisely
  • using the right language for effective advertising campaigns
  • setting company-wide language policy.

Andrew commented, “Birketts offers a range of international services to clients based in the UK and to those abroad with financial or business interests in the UK. Getting the language right is of paramount importance, especially in legal and business communication. With companies of all sizes now trading across borders, getting it wrong can be extremely costly and give your competitors a distinct advantage.”
Stridonium's initiative has the support of high-calibre speakers with backgrounds in politics, business and diplomacy, including:

• Sir Colin Budd KCMG, former British Ambassador to the Netherlands
• Charles Grant CMG, Director of the Centre for European Reform
• Jeff Heasman, Director at the Pyramid Group
• Susannah Poulton, Culture and Language Adviser, UK Trade and Investment.
