Jenny Fox, of Storeys Way, Cambridge, was so affected during a trip to Mount Kilimanjaro last August that she rallied fellow Anglia Ruskin Enterprise and Entrepreneurial Management students to organise a fine dining event and auction in Cambridge later this month in aid of the WaterAid charity.
Carwyn Willis, Ben Geering, Jonathan Davies and Karina Karaulova have joined Jenny in organising the Bid for Water fundraiser, to be held at Downing College on Saturday 29 March. The auction will be hosted by the famous Bonhams Auction House, and local businesses and individuals are being invited to join the likes of Julian Huppert MP and Paul Saunders, Mayor of Cambridge, who have already confirmed their attendance.
All money raised will go towards providing access to clean water and improved sanitation in Monza, Zambia – a country where more than a third of all people have no access to clean water, causing the death of 5,000 children per year.
Jenny, 24, said: “While preparing to undertake the climb, I thought I’d considered most eventualities, expecting conditions to be harsh in comparison to the UK. I realised while I was there, that I had not estimated the overwhelming impact of not having access to many of the basic amenities we take for granted.”
Mr Huppert added: “Children are dying in the rural communities of Zambia because of the lack of clean water and sanitation. For many it’s a daily struggle to source water for their families and carrying the heavy containers leads to back and neck injuries.
“This event is hugely worthwhile in helping to provide the money to give some of those children a chance. I congratulate these students because their efforts will make a big difference to some of these young people.”
Tickets cost £65 each or £550 for a table for ten. For more information, visit http://www.bidforwater.com. The event begins at 6.45pm.
