Students’ Union officially ‘green gurus’

Anglia Ruskin University’s Students’ Union has been awarded the Gold standard in the NUS Green Impact Students’ Union awards for the first time.

This year 117 different Students’ Unions took part in the accreditation scheme, contributing to a total of 5,632 sustainability actions through the Green Impact toolkit.

Anglia Ruskin’s Students’ Union achieved a higher than average score in almost every category, and increased their overall points tally by 7% since last year.

Anglia Ruskin SU President, Sammi Whittaker, said: “When I began as President, myself and the team were aware we were Silver in Green Impact and we pledged that this year we would finally achieve Gold.  Receiving this award has been the culmination of many years’ work to embed sustainability into the organisation.

“Sustainability now appears in all aspects of the Students’ Union’s activities, including staff induction, course rep training, clubs and societies training, campaigns, volunteering, community engagement and events planning, ensuring that staff and students are fully engaged.”

In their report, the Green Impact auditors said: “When ARU Students’ Union first started Green Impact it was largely focused on organising recycling systems and switching things off, whereas in this latest audit the Students’ Union has demonstrated sustainability having been embedded across the entire organisation from strategy to volunteering, to course rep training to wider campaigns with the university.

“Hopefully the journey that the Students’ Union has taken with regards to sustainability can continue to grow and strengthen.”

Anglia Ruskin’s Students’ Union Executive Officers will collect the Gold award at the Students’ Union 2016 awards ceremony on 7 July.  For more details about the Students’ Union environmental work, visit www.angliastudent.com/green
