Tecwyn hopes to put rivals to the sword

An Anglia Ruskin University student has been selected to represent Great Britain in the traditional Japanese martial art of Iaido.

Tecwyn Lee, a Computer Gaming Technology student, will be flying to Finland later this month to take part in the 21st European Iaido Championships, which are being held in Helsinki from 30 October until 2 November.

Iaido, an offshoot of Kendo, teaches the correct use of the sword, rather than the bamboo of Kendo.  Tecwyn practices Muso Shinden Ryu, which has its roots in the classical sword techniques of the 15th and 16th centuries.

The 20-year-old, who lives in Steeple Bumpstead near Haverhill and trains twice a week at West Wickham village hall, has finished third at the National British Open Tai Kai and impressed the selectors with his first-place finish at the Summer Seminar Koryu Tai Kai.

Tecwyn said: “It was great to hear that the reason they chose me is because those in charge of picking the squad were watching me in the recent summer competition, which I won.

“My friend David Parker, who is from the same Dojo, will be travelling as well to represent Great Britain in the 4th dan division.  There are going to be so many new people to meet from the other countries and we all something in common, so the atmosphere will be great.

“Being selected hasn’t really sunk in yet.  I have been practicing hard for this and I will continue to practice hard right up until the competition begins.

“I have a fantastic teacher, who has represented Great Britain 15 times and has won both European and multiple British championships, so being chosen shows not just how good I am but how good my teacher is to bring me to this level.”
