Thousands to party on Parker's Piece for Big Weekend

A momentous weekend for Cambridge will begin with fireworks and will end with a world-famous cycling event. The Big Weekend, sponsored by Anglia Ruskin, is taking place from today on Parker’s Piece in the city and will see thousands turn up to a free weekend of music and festivities.

Billy Ocean, who enjoyed huge success with 1980s hits such as When the Going Gets Tough and Get Outta My Dreams, will perform tonight (Friday) along with hugely successful 1970s stars the Bay City Rollers.

Throughout the weekend there will be educational activities, stalls, a sports zone, a beer tent and Anglia Ruskin’s Roadshow bus, featuring family activities inside one fun-filled double-decker. Outside the bus will be hula hoops and giant Jenga and Connect 4. As a special treat, Ruskin the Rhino will also be making a guest appearance.

Thrill-seekers can enjoy the rides on the fairground, while fans of Gallic cuisine will enjoy a taste of the continent at the French Market.

On Monday, the best cyclists in the world will pass through the city as part of the Tour de France, providing a fantastic opportunity for people in Cambridge to get close up to one of the biggest and most prestigious international sporting events.

Chris Chang, Pro Vice Chancellor, Corporate Marketing International and Development Services, said: “The Big Weekend has so much going on for people of all ages, and for it to culminate in the Tour de France on Monday is something really special. I hope the people of Cambridge will turn out in great numbers for a fun-packed weekend.”
