TWI builds on links with China and explores technologies at the International Graphene Summit

TWI’s Surface Engineering Consultant, Dave Harvey, presented at the recent International Graphene Summit in Beijing. This event, co-organised by TWI China Industrial Member, AECC BIAM, celebrated the recent opening of the Beijing Graphene Industry Innovation Center.

One of four invited speakers, including Sir Konstantin Novoselov FRS, the joint 2010 Nobel Laureate in Physics for his work in graphene, Dave spoke about TWI’s innovations in cold spray technology and its adoption as a coating, repair and additive manufacturing technology.

The summit, which was held at the Yanshan Petrochemical Centre to the south-west of Beijing, highlights the joint investment of the Tianjin-Beijing-Hebei regions in graphene technology. Opening addresses included high-ranking officials from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Ministry of Science and Technology and the vice-president of SINOPEC.

The Beijing Graphene Industry Innovation Center, in which AECC BIAM is the majority shareholder, was set up in April 2017 by Beijing Institute of Graphene Technology (BIGT) and Z-Park Graphene Industry Alliance in China’s ‘Silicon Valley.’

This collaboration follows on from the June 2017 establishment of the BIAM-TWI Centre for Advanced Manufacturing Technologies. The two organisations are collaborating on research into additive manufacturing, brazing diffusion bonding and repair of gas turbine materials in support of civil aero engine development. As part of the agreement, visiting research staff will be seconded from AECC BIAM to TWI in support of the projects.
