The IMechE party was led by president, Carolyn Griffiths and contained representatives from the local region, including IMechE’s eastern region chair Peter Wotherspoon, south Essex area chairman Roy Horrocks, apprentice engineer and IMechE automobile division Essex centre committee member Alice Swallow. Also visiting were IMechE Cambridgeshire area chair Carlyne Parillon, IMechE business development manager, Lara Mallett, and Engin Tujumet, the Cambridgeshire publicity officer for IMechE.
The delegates were met by TWI Ltd’s Chief Executive Dr Christoph Wiesner, Operations Director Dr Mike Russell, and Non-executive Director Steve Yianni. Chris Eady represented The Welding institute, and Phillippa Moore was there on behalf of the Tipper Group, whose focus is the development of women in engineering.
Dr Wiesner offered an overview of TWI before a tour of the engineering facilities. This tour highlighted TWI’s unique work in large-scale mechanical testing, with a particular interest shown in electron beam and laser Surfi-Sculpt® surfacing technology, joining of fabrics by laser welding, and aerospace components by linear friction welding, all of which have been invented or significantly developed at TWI.
Following the tour, the delegation was given the opportunity to speak informally with engineering staff before Carolyn Griffiths presented Dr Wiesner with a small gift as a token of their appreciation.
Dr Russell commented that it had been ‘a great pleasure for TWI to welcome Carolyn and her team to our Abington headquarters,’ and said that, ‘TWI is looking forward to further discussions, and to progressing opportunities for collaboration in areas of mutual interest.’
