Two Cambridge companies shortlisted for national internship awards

Cambridge-based professional services firm, Abdi and Jagex Games Studio have been shortlisted for National Council for Work Experience (NCWE) Awards.

The NCWE Awards recognise businesses from all sectors and sizes that provide exceptional student and graduate internships. They are now in their ninth year and 2012 has been a record year for entries - a 50% increase on 2011 with more than 300 entries.

Abdi will compete for the Graduate Internship of the Year title in the category for businesses with fewer than 250 employees. Jagex Games Studio will compete for the Work Placement of the Year title in the category for organisations with over 250 employees offering long-term placements for more than 20 students.

Winners will be announced on Tuesday 20 March at Merchant Taylors’ Hall in London by Dr Paul Redmond, one of the UK’s leading experts on graduate employability, from The University of Liverpool.

Jane Massy, CEO of abdi Ltd says: “We are delighted to be shortlisted for this prestigious award. As a small professional services firm we appreciate the opportunity to host and support graduate interns in our company as it has proved to be mutually beneficial. I would also like to express our gratitude to Step Enterprise who is our longstanding partner in helping us to recruit highly qualified and motivated graduates.”

Laura Hare, Human Resources Manager at Jagex says: “We are extremely proud of our placement programme at Jagex and are delighted to be shortlisted for this award. Our placement scheme is about to enter its seventh year and this nomination stands as a real testament to the hard work of those who operate the scheme and the excellent students we employ.”

Mike Hill, chief executive of the Higher Education Careers Services Unit, which operates the NCWE says: “The NCWE Awards have been more popular than ever this year, reflecting the central role work experience is playing in business today. We’ve had a fantastic response from students, which is a great reflection on companies like these that are striving to offer high quality schemes.”

The judging panel represents the full internship process through a number of senior professionals, including specialists from Which? and Regent’s College.

This year’s sponsors include the AGR, Changeboard, GlaxoSmithKline, Centrica, Holiday Extras, CRCC Asia, PlaceNet and Intel.
