BEAT's experience shows that support from parents and families is often critical in the prevention, detection or support of a child or young person affected by an eating disorder.
Cambridge Parent Forum - a new organisation in Cambridge - has invited an experienced professional from BEAT to run a short seminar on March 1st from 9 - 11.30am to raise awareness about the issues involved in eating disorders.
This workshop is designed to enable parents or other family members to become better informed: it will answer the most common questions and concerns often raised by parents, carers and families when tackling this topic such as:
- Why do some young people develop eating disorders?
- How can parents help prevent eating disorders
- How would I know if my child had an eating disorder?
- How can I help my child - or offer support to any of their friends affected
The guest speaker from BEAT who is presenting the seminar is Faith Chapman who has worked as an Occupational Therapist in the field of Eating Disorders for over 10 years in both the private sector at the Roehampton Priory Hospital and and within the NHS at the St Georges Eating Disorder service. Faith is particularly interested in the role of self esteem in the prevention and treatment of eating disorders.
Faith has worked for BEAT for six years as an associate trainer, delivering sessions to raise awareness of eating disorders with health care professionals and within educational settings to teachers, pupils and parents.
BEAT is the UK’s leading eating disorders charity which raises awareness, provides helplines, online support and a network of UK-wide self-help groups to help adults and young people.
This short seminar is designed to be friendly, open and informative for parents or family members who want to understand more about this topic and understand the critical role played by parents and other family members to help prevent, detect and support eating disorders in children and young people. Attendees will leave with a clearer insight of the related issues and feel better prepared for any future issues should they emerge.
