Victorian Studies expert is Anglia Ruskin's new Dean of Arts, Law and Social Sciences

Anglia Ruskin University has appointed Professor Martin Hewitt as the new Dean for the Faculty of Arts, Law and Social Sciences.

Professor Hewitt will join Anglia Ruskin from the University of Huddersfield in September, ahead of formally taking up the role on 1 October.  Professor Hewitt will be assisted by Deputy Deans Dr Andy Salmon, who has been acting as Interim Dean, and Dr Apurba Kundu.

Commenting on his new position, Professor Hewitt said: “I’m delighted to have the chance to join Anglia Ruskin at a key moment in its development.  I know from long experience just how important the education offered by institutions like Anglia Ruskin is to the life chances and personal development of their students.

“I’m looking forward to working with staff and students in Arts, Law and Social Sciences to make a major contribution to the University’s progress in establishing itself as one of the country’s leading post-92 universities.  There is huge potential here, and exciting opportunities for the Faculty to play a leading role in the cultural and intellectual life of the East of England.”

Professor Hewitt read History at Oriel College Oxford, before embarking on postgraduate work which took him to the University of Warwick (MBA), the University of New Brunswick (MA in History) and then back to Nuffield College, Oxford, where he completed a D.Phil on mid-nineteenth century Manchester with Asa Briggs.

He has taught at the London School of Economics, the University of Hull, and Leeds Trinity University, where he was Director of Research and Professor of Victorian Studies.  He was Head of History and then History, Politics and Philosophy at Manchester Metropolitan University (2008-12), and has since September 2012 been Dean of Music, Humanities and Media at the University of Huddersfield.

Professor Hewitt was the founding editor of the Journal of Victorian Culture and first Secretary of the British Association for Victorian Studies.  His published work has ranged across topics including the Victorian city and its cultural institutions, diaries and life-writing, Victorian Studies as a field, and the Victorian press.
