Waste regulations to be simplified following environmental Red Tape Challenge

The Government's review of environmental legislation, part of the Red Tape Challenge that aims to reduce the administrative burden on businesses, looks set to curb a range of waste management-related regulations.

This will include making the completion of waste transfer notes quicker and easier, seeking exemptions from registration requirements for small businesses transporting their own waste, and addressing complaints relating to the high costs of complying with the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) legislation.

Said Peter Watts, Environmental Consultant, Workplace Law:  "The breadth of environmental legislation that we have in the UK is something which has been hard fought for and won over the years and we now have some of the best environmental protection in the world.  As part of the principle of sustainable development, this environmental protection has to be balanced with the requirements of the economy and people.

“The results of the Red Tape Challenge were not as detrimental to environmental protection as many had feared, and for business will lead to easier and more easily affordable compliance in some key areas including waste, environmental permitting and planning.  We will be observing closely over the coming months as the different pieces of legislation undergo consultation. Any changes which can help ensure employers adhere to environmental regulation are to be welcomed.”

During the Th!nk FM conference on 18 June, Peter will host a sustainability themed session: Think Green, Act Green: A sustainable approach to refurbishment.

He explains:  "The session intends to show that sustainable refurbishment can encompass a broad diversity of approaches and will assist delegates to evaluate the desired outcomes at project inception."

Taking a case study approach with M Moser, the session will focus on the benefits of sustainable construction and how it applies in practice, with particular reference to waste management in refurbishments and office refits– a particular area of opportunity for FMs.

Think Green, Act Green: A sustainable approach to refurbishment is just one of the sessions taking place at Th!nk FM 2012, the leading event for Facilities Managers, which takes place on 18 June 2012 at the Royal College of Physicians.

Th!nkFM is a development of BIFM’s annual conference and Workplace Law’s Annual Facilities Management Legal Update Conference, which celebrated 12 successful years in June 2011.  Past delegates from Workplace Law’s conference will receive a 10% discount for Th!nkFM 2012.
