The event began with an Awards Presentation Ceremony presided over by TWI Associate Director of Professional Affairs, Chris Eady, with invited presenters including The Welding Institute’s President, Bertil Pekkari, with Professor Sir Colin Humphries, Steve Beech, Richard Dolby OBE and Peter Bateman.

Recognising that the achievements of the award winners would not have been possible without teamwork, and in a year of business growth for the TWI group enabled through successful partnerships – particularly with the development of new facilities for the National Structural Integrity Research Centre in Cambridge, new laboratories in Port Talbot and Kuala Lumpur, and a strengthened professional association with The Armourers & Brasiers’ Company – guest speaker Robert Sorrell, BP Vice President for Public Partnerships, focused on collaboration as the key to the advancement of materials sciences.
‘By bringing industry and academic research together we are presented with an unprecedented opportunity to apply leading edge science to the development of advanced materials for cross-sector exploitation.’
Dr Sorrell connected the role of materials with human development. He spoke of modern-day innovation and exploitation in the use of steels to meet the challenges faced by different sectors from oil and gas to automotive to apply materials in ever more demanding environments. Advances in modelling, characterisation and imaging are enabling new insights into materials performance under these challenging conditions.
TWI Chief Executive Christoph Wiesner thanked Dr Sorrell and the guests, notably the Professional Members of The Welding Institute, Industrial Members of TWI, academic partners and business associates, acknowledging their contributions during the evening and their role in the continued progress and success of the organisation.
