Will the environmental vote swing it?

Candidates standing in Cambridge in May’s General Election will be highlighting their environmental credentials when they take part in a Question Time panel discussion at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge this Friday, 20 March (7.30pm).

The event, run in conjunction with Cambridge Carbon Footprint and Transition Cambridge, will see Chamali Fernando (Conservative), Rupert Read (Green), Daniel Zeichner (Labour) and incumbent MP Julian Huppert (Liberal Democrat) go head to head on a range of climate change and environmental issues.  Ukip candidate Patrick O’Flynn declined to participate.

The event is being chaired by Dr Aled Jones, Director of Anglia Ruskin University’s Global Sustainability Institute.  Dr Jones said: “2015 promises to be a crucial year for sustainability, with governments around the world set to agree a new set of global development goals as well as a climate change protocol.

“It promises to be a fascinating evening hearing from the local candidates in Cambridge how they see themselves and their parties playing a role on the international as well as national scene.

“Russell Brand called for an active boycott of the General Election because of a lack of political leadership – in particular around issues such as the environment and social justice.  However, I’m sure the local parliamentary candidates will outline why they believe voting is more important than ever.”

Anne Miller of Cambridge Carbon Footprint said: “We’ve been overwhelmed with interest in this event.  The environment and climate change is clearly a hot electoral issue in Cambridge.”

Roland Beevor of Transition Cambridge added: “Polling in Cambridge is so close...  environmental issues could swing it.”
