Wysing Young Artists pop-up at exhibition in Cambridge

Wysing Young Artists are to exhibit their work in a pop-up gallery in Cambridge’s Grafton Centre as part of the Changing Spaces scheme.

Wysing Young Artists in residence (WYA) is a ground breaking talent development programme for young artists and curators aged 16-24 years old. It helps young people in the Eastern region to develop their arts practice in a professional environment and includes workshops and mentoring by professional artists.

For the first time Wysing Arts Centre has run the WYA programme as a summer artist-in-residence scheme at its Bourn site this August, giving young people a similar experience to the professional residency artists working there exploring the theme of The Mirror. Over the past month, 14 young artists have had workshops with 10 different artists, used the gallery as their own group studio space and attended the same events as professional residency artists.

Young artists have led the direction of the programme over the summer.  Participating artist Alice Cole says “This experience has been very rewarding and I have learnt so much from it. It’s been an amazing opportunity to meet professional artists as well as other young artists. I’m really looking forward to our exhibition and the chance to show my work to the public.”

Work on show will include painting, drawing, photography and film works produced during the WYA summer residency.  The exhibition is open 24 – 28 August 2012 10am - 6pm Friday, Saturday and Tuesday and 12pm - 4pm Sunday and Monday.

Wysing Young Artists in residence is supported by J.P.Morgan and part of Plus Tate with subsidised places provided by the Ernest Cook Trust. The pop-up gallery is in the Grafton Centre near the escalators and is part of Cambridge’s Changing Spaces project.

The Wysing Young Artist in residence scheme is modelled on Wysing’s professional artist in residence programme.  For six weeks from 15 July, professional artists Ed Atkins, Nicolas Deshayes, Philomene Pirecki and Turner Prize 2012 nominee Elizabeth Price are in residence at Wysing’s rural site, developing  new work that explores the contemporary and alternate realities in response to the metaphor of The Mirror.

WYSING ARTS CENTRE is a working campus providing alternative environments and structures for artistic production, learning and knowledge exchange. Wysing’s large rural site near Cambridge comprises artists’ studios, education and new media facilities, a gallery and project spaces, a 17th century farmhouse and outdoor structures. Wysing offers a unique environment for art to be developed and presented; with an ongoing and innovative artistic programme of events, exhibitions, retreats and residencies; and a unique programme for young artists, Wysing is delivering a rich programme that is accessible on many levels to a range of people. Art developed at Wysing is shown at significant venues around the world, and Wysing is part of national networks including Plus Tate, Turning Point, the Arts Council National Portfolio and Own Art.

Changing Spaces: The exhibition is the first collaboration between Wysing Arts Centre and Changing Spaces, the scheme which places artwork and exhibitions in temporarily disused shop space around the city.  See http://changing-spaces.org for details.
